What a day!

March 2020 has been an exceptional month for everyone with the COVID-19 crisis significantly changing daily life around the world. We in racing, have been extremely fortunate to be able to continue with our sport, one of the very few sports still running in this country. Strict guidelines have been put in place preventing owners from visiting the stables and attending the races so it was an eerily quiet day at Sapphire Coast on the 27th when we had our most successful day in the history of Thorotek Racing.

Our little bulldog Airfree kicked off the day with a victory in the BM66 1408m. Airfree has fought her way back from a bleeding attack back in August last year and overcome an issue with her back in recent months. Kayla Nisbet gave her a great ride and it was wonderful to see her steaming up the outside of the field to take the win.

This victory should give Airfree enough benchmark points to make it into the Moruya Cup field on the 12th of April over 1425m.

Our second winner of the day was Instruments who was on the six day back up. Ridden by Blaike McDougall, she showed a good turn of foot to snatch the win right on the line.

As part of the COVID-19 restrictions, each jockey needs to be provided with their own set of silks so Blaike wore our old colours from the pre-Thorotek days. It was nice to see the heart silks win again and it took us back to the old days of racing one of our favourite horses Expatriate.

Boom and Zoom was our best chance for the meeting following a string of excellent performances, including a close 2nd in the Federal on Black Opal Day at Canberra earlier in the month.

Boom and Zoom has a speciality for drawing a wide barrier but she jumped from 3 on this occasion and was able to run a very good time to claim her maiden win. Her consistency this prep has been excellent and she continues to mature into a lovely horse.

Last race of the day saw another extremely consistent mare of ours, Heavenly Thunder, bring up our 4th winner for the day. Heavenly Thunder showed real guts to squeeze through a tiny gap in the straight and grab the win.

Four winners in a single meeting is a rare achievement and is a fitting reward for our team who have worked so hard to bring our stable back from the bushfire emergency earlier this year. Congratulations to all our winning owners celebrating at home in these strange times!
